Today’s students are facing a true challenge.  Grammar skills, the basic rules of Standard Written English, are taught only minimally throughout the high school years.  In fact, a recent conversation with a local instructor for AP European History revealed that for all the writing requirements of the end-of-the-year AP exam, there is absolutely no emphasis, or grading, on “style” (i.e. grammar and syntax).

1)
How do colleges use the test scores?
Some colleges require Subject Tests for admission.
Along with other background information (high school grades,
teacher recommendations, etc.), they provide a measure of
academic achievement and are a predictor of future
performance. Colleges can use the scores to help determine
how well prepared student are for different college programs,
place them
in freshman and higher-level course work, and/or
advise them on course selection
2)
What is the purpose of the Writing Subject test?
The test measures the ability to express ideas effectively in
standard written English, to recognize faults in usage and
structure, and to use language with sensitivity to meaning.

3)

What is the test format?
The test is one hour long.  This includes 40 minutes of multiple-
choice questions and a 20-minute essay on an assigned topic.
The 60 multiple-choice questions deal with common writing
problems such as: standard usage rules, being consistent,
expressing ideas logically, and being clear and precise.
It has happened that in the past several years, with the increased leniency towards use of “slang,” as well as the integration of foreign words and phrases into everyday speech as a result of a more global society, that the way students speak on a daily basis is increasingly different from the way they are expected to express themselves through the written word.  However, the student who is able to master and apply the rules of Standard Written English is going to have greater opportunities in both academic and employment careers, as professors and employers will expect proficiency in skills of writing and expression.
